The Black Table sat in Burfell Hall, reputed to be the most haunted manor in Scotland. It was known that the entire family had perished sitting at that table, with no known cause and only one survivor.
Thomas, the lone member of Burfell family to leave the Hall, would never speak of what happed. Asked, interrogated and, finally, jailed for the death of the others, he sat mute in the face of all accusations. A priest, certain of Thomas’s innocence, finally spoke to him in private and great length, beseeching the secret of what happened. Thomas remained silent for hours. In confession, of what happened at that table, Thomas only said, “If you knew the secret that I carry, you would fall down on your knees and thank God it was not yours.”
